Tokyo stocks closed higher Friday, mirroring Wall Street's overnight rise, with investors relieving that congressional testimony given by former FBI Director James Comey would likely not overly affect U.S. President Donald Trump's administration.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 104 points, or 0.52 percent, from Thursday, to end the day at 20,013.26.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 1.25 points, or 0.08 percent, to close at 1,591.66.
Bank, information and communication, and nonferrous metal-related stocks comprised those that advanced the most by the close of play, and declining issues outnumbered advancing ones by 982 to 903, on the First Section.
Trading volume on the main section on Friday came to 2,263.87 million shares, up from Thursday's volume of 1,983.75 million shares.
The turnover on the last trading day of the week totaled 3,200.0 billion yen (28.98 billion yen).
